Domestic Missions
Downtown is spreading the gospel of Jesus in the U.S.
The Domestic Missions Committee at Downtown is implementing our mission of seeking the lost by supporting missionaries going to work in areas of our country where the good news of Jesus is not well known. The need is great in many major population centers of the U.S. We are currently focusing on three projects:
OutReach America
OutReach America focuses on recruiting and equipping college students to intentionally move to mission areas of the U.S. where they will assist struggling churches or start new ones working as individuals, ministry teams or campus ministry workers.
Marvin Crowson, Downtown elder, is the founder of OutReach America on the Harding Campus and works diligently with these teams and individuals. The team members are generally prepared as vocational missionaries. The church in San Francisco, Lake Merced, is benefiting from this work. Wes and Airiel Woodell are members of this team and will be joining them in 2008 (see their blog). Downtown has agreed to be their sponsoring church. Wes and Airiel will be focused on establishing a campus ministry on San Francisco State University campus, which is located only two blocks from the Lake Merced church building and has 40,000 students. Wes Woodell, son of Jim, Downtown elder, and Geraldine, has been active in campus ministry programs in Florida and is presently enrolled in Harding’s School of Biblical Studies.
Our Danny Campbell, son of Eddie, former Downtown elder, and Kathryn, is in the mission field in Augusta, Maine. The church is growing and being edified with Danny’s and wife Kim’s efforts. Support of $2200 for the Campbells has been approved by the Downtown Domestic Mission Committee. Fifteen adults and students from the Downtown Youth Group will be helping with the Vacation Bible School at the church in Augusta in July 2008.
The Inner City North Little Rock
The inner city of North Little Rock, River City Church has Don Williams, an experienced missionary, working there for the second year. He and his wife, Deanne have taught and baptized four souls this year. We are providing partial support to Don and Deanne. Downtown’s youth group has been to River City Church for worship and fellowship. A vacation bible school is planned this summer with the two youth groups reaching out to the inner city youth. Downtown and River City youth have plans for 2008 that will include a mission trip to Augusta, Maine.
